Thanks to the efforts of the Major Hospital Foundation Development Council and the generosity of many donors,
the Foundation was able to complete payment of its pledge to the hospital of $600,000 designated to charity care
via the Gift of Health Community Initiative. With the help of many, the pledge was fulfilled by the end of 2013 as
This partnership between the community and hospital to serve those in need is
the hallmark of a sustainable healthcare system.
Major Hospital Foundation’s Gift of Health Community Initiative is like no other in our history. It is not a project
about acquiring the latest in medical equipment or about building new medical facilities. This is a project about
people: our very own families, friends, neighbors, and co-workers who are experiencing an honest hardship.
As a not-for-profit hospital, Major Hospital’s mission is to provide quality healthcare to all who need it, regardless of
the patient's ability to pay. Increasing healthcare costs and decreasing insurance coverage from employers has left
many families unable to cover their hospital expenses. MHP estimates that there are 4,500 people living in Shelby
County without insurance coverage of any kind. Even more are under-insured. Yet they still need healthcare, and
it’s the mission of MHP to provide it. For individuals needing assistance, the community’s support in fulfilling the Gift of Health Community Initiative is without price.
Contributions to the Gift of Health Community Initiative have helped care for our
most vulnerable patients: those unable to pay for healthcare.
