Major Quality Cares Campaign, 2009
  Quick Links

Welcome, and thank you for visiting the Major Quality Cares web page!  This page is especially for employees, volunteers, physicians, and board members of the hospital and foundation.  It’s the place to be to learn about Major Quality Cares, our annual giving campaign for the Major Hospital Foundation.

About the Campaign
The 2009 Campaign is the fourth year for Major Quality Cares.  A campaign committee has been formed and is working hard toward a successful employee-led, employee-designed campaign.

Committee members are:

Ryan Claxton, Administration
Laura Horine, Major Pediatrics
Connie McGraw, Major OB-GYN
James Neal, Engineering
Christy Neisler, New Cardiac Service Line
Ruthie Schoentrup, Major Sports Medicine
Linda Skiillman, Imaging
Adam Snyder, Registration
Shelley Snyder, ER
June Taylor, Diabetes Education
Michael Vierling, Accounting (Campaign Chairman)
Cindy Weidner, Nursing Administration

The committee has set a goal of $68,000 from 250 donors. Our volunteers and physicians are invited to participate in the campaign by making a gift. This goal represents about a seven percent increase over what was raised last year. It may seem crazy to increase the goal at first considering this difficult economic period. However, consider this: The work that the foundation does, especially in the area of charity care, is more important than ever. In fact, while you may certainly choose other areas of the foundation for your gift, charity care is our focus this year.

The campaign kicks off November 2 with a fun kick-off event (more details soon) and closes November 28.

Charity Care is the Foundation's Focus this Year.
Whey you look at your pledge card this year, you will notice that the mission area choices are different than in years past. That's because we are starting on a special charity care initiative to help uninsured Shelby County residents access healthcare. To give people the opportunity to help us help the uninsured, we've put together a special "charity care package giving opportunity." When you choose to give to charity care, your gift will be used:
  • To help the hospital support the Shelby Community Health Center (Shelby County's free healthcare clinic) so that uninsured Shelby County residents can have a medical home,
  • To help pay hospital bills for patients who meet federal poverty guidelines,
  • To help inpatients afford their prescriptions until long-term prescription help is achieved,
  • To help fund unexpected, incidental costs related to healthcare for our patients who lack resources.
This plan of support will leverage the Foundation's fundraising capacity to help uninsured patients maintain and manage their health in an effective, affordable environment. Patients who have improved access to prescriptions will be healthier and make fewer preventable visits to the emergency room, and families struggling to meet basic needs will not be overburdened with high medical debt.

You may also choose to direct your gift to the unrestricted fund; facilities, equipment and technology, education, or employee relief. If you choose the unrestricted fund, your gift will be used at the discretion of the foundation's board of directors.

What has the Foundation done in the past year?

To see what the Foundation did in 2008, click here to see a copy of our 2008 Annual Report. Here is a summary of the Foundation's activities for 2008 and to date in 2009:
  • During 2008, helped ten employees totaling $3,706 through the employee relief fund. To date have helped seven employees through employee relief fund for $3,020.
  • Completed the Healing Garden. Scientific studies show that healing gardens do indeed help cancer patients heal. The Benesse Garden was specifically designed and built with these studies in mind and provides an important component of the complementary care offered to cancer patients at Benesse.
  • Gave $6,742 in 2008 for patient support and $8,498 to date in 2009. This support includes everything from funding small, unexpected healthcare related needs for our patients who lack resources to purchasing craft items for our volunteers to use in making small, homey gifts like pillows, meal tray favors, etc. These gifts help our patients know they are cared for as individuals and to relax in what can fell like an institutional environment.
  • Made a $9,600 grant to the social services department in 2008 to help with inpatient prescription assistance. Between October, 2008 and August, 2009, have spent $6,123 of this grant on 92 prescriptions, helping 54 patients.
  • Helped purchase whiteboards for ICU and Med/Surg to be used to facilitate the creation and achievement of individualized patient care goals. This practice has been shown to increase positive patient outcomes since the patient is actively involved in their own plan of care.
  • Gave $18,311 in investment income and designated gifts to the hospital for charity care, helping twenty self-pay patients cover their hospital bills.
Your Gift
Employees are encouraged to make gifts through payroll deduction.  Simply indicate on your pledge card the amount you would like to have deducted from your paycheck to the foundation with each pay.  For example, if you would like to give $100 to the foundation over the course of 2010, divide $100 by 24 pays for $4.17 to come from your check each pay.

Payroll deductions will begin with the first pay in January, 2010, and end with the last pay in December, 2010.

Volunteers and board members may elect to write one lump sum check to the foundation.  Simply attach the check to your pledge card and turn it in to Cindy Isaac in administration or mail it to the Major Hospital Foundation at 150 West Washington Street.  Employees may also make a one-time lump sum gift.

Volunteers and board members may also elect to pledge a certain amount and then spread payments out over the course of 2010.  If you would like, the Foundation can send you reminders when it’s time to make a payment.  Employees may also choose to make a gift in this manner.  Your pledge card will have a place for you to indicate if this gift method is your choice.

Gifts to the Foundation are tax deductible if you itemize.  Remember, you must claim the deduction on your tax return in order to receive it.  If you make a lump sum gift or give through payments, you will receive a written acknowledgement from the foundation that will satisfy IRS requirements for charitable gift deductions.  If you make your gift through payroll deduction, your last pay stub of the year will satisfy IRS requirements in the same way.

Gifts of PDO
For the first time this year, employees may give a gift of PDO to the foundation. This way, you can make a gift, receive a tax deduction, and not change your take home pay. This may be an option for you this year if your budget is feeling stretched but giving is still important to you. Keep in mind the following:
  • A PDO gift will be made at your base rate only--no differentials will be included.
  • You must have a minimum of 80 hours in your PDO bank to donate (taking into consideration any hours that may have already been approved for time off).
  • A minimum PDO gift is two hours.
  • You will be taxed just as if you had used the PDO for vacation or other time off.
  • You might wish to keep in mind that the actual donation received by the foundation will be net of taxes. For example, if you give $100 in PDO and if $10 in payroll taxes are taken out, your gift to the foundation is $90.
  • A gift through PDO to the foundation is tax deductible if you itemize.
  • A payroll deduction will appear on your pay stub showing the gift. Save this stub for your tax return if you are going to claim the deduction.
  • PDO gifts will be deducted from your PDO bank one time only.
  • The PDO deduction to the foundation will occur before 12/31/2009.
